Michael: Mary can I ask you a little bit about.eh. your childhood and firstly.em. where were you born.are you.are you Leeds.you know Leeds.

Mary: No not at all. in fact when people ask me where I'm from I find it very difficult to answer because I was born in Cheshire.em. and we lived there for about. 18 months I think and then my parents moved to Birmingham because of my father's job, so I grew up in Birmingham for ten years but my parents weren't from Birmingham.my mum was from Kent and my father was.em. from North Wales so. a sense of having roots is about being in North Wales or in Kent with grandparents there but it's nothing to do with being in Birmingham and then my father's job moved again and we were moved to Nottingham so I was a teenager in Nottingham.em.and then. I went off to University in Kent.I was quite close to my grandparents and then I've lived in all sorts of different places in the UK since then.em

Michael: Which place do you remember most?

Mary: Birmingham and Nottingham.but I don't feel any sense of belonging to either of them.

Michael: Do you still have friends from there?

Mary: Eh.not from Birmingham, from Nottingham yes.em.but I think it's.it's.when people ask me where I'm from I sort of feel.when people say where they're from that's where they belong and where I feel I belong is here, in Yorkshire, because this is where I've lived longest, and it's where my children have grown up and it's the longest I've ever lived in one house.em.so I'm sure Yorkshire people wouldn't feel that I belonged here, but I belong here!
