Wendy: What do you think is a good citizen?
Pauline: I think a good citizen is somebody who helps those less fortunate than themselves. I was in my butchers the other day and I saw a slogan that said 'think global, act local'. I think people can do it at a local level, it doesn't have to be international politics. But yes I think people. for me people who have a look on the world, who are concerned about things like global warming, I think that's a good ingredient for a good citizen, lots to work on there.
Wendy: So, working on environmental issues.
Pauline: On environmental issues, I think it's important.
Wendy: ... and for themselves locally you don't have to be.
Pauline: In school it arises all the time. If you see litter dropped outside you know you can encourage children to pick it up, and if you're interested in that yourself automatically you can tell children about the dangers of it, and they need to keep ... to look after our world.
Wendy: Save on electricity and resources?
Pauline: Yes, save on electricity and so on. You just do it, you pass it on automatically just as you do as a parent to your own children, you pass it on in the teaching. So, there's great opportunity, great opportunity for teachers to lead from the front.
Wendy: Yes.
