Digibooks (this area is in-progress)
Write a book and make it digital: digibook. The books in this section are all short stories, some fictional, some informative, some in a comic book style and some use the lyrics of music. The motivation behind digibooks is to produce engaging reading material with audio and visual as props to support the written word. For more information read the 'tutors' section. Developed in collaboration with ESOL tutors at Leeds City College. Special thanks to Jennie Cole.

These digital books (or digibooks) are being developed to meet the increasing range of teaching/learning methods and the associated media through which information is communicated. It is envisaged that use of these digibooks may include:
- paper-based for whole class reading or 1:1 peer reading,
- mobile phone/PDA access for learners with newer types of touch screen mobiles,
- independent learner access on a computer at home or in college,
- tutor presentation on an Interactive Whiteboard,
- paper-based used in conjunction with a Whiteboard for class delivery.
The books cover a range of genres including narrative, informative, explanatory, poetry, creative, etc. The digibooks are designed on two learning principles: (1) multimodality and the affordance of the visual and audio for developing reading skills (2) the interdependence of listening, reading and writing and how each mode might mutually benefit the other when used collectively rather than in isolation. For further information on these topics please read an introduction to multimodality and what multimodal communicative competence might mean in the second language classroom.
