The traffic's really, really bad. I'm very, very sorry. Pat: Oh. But you should have been home early. You should have been home ages ago. Why didn't you leave earlier? Stephen: I did try to leave earlier but you see there was a problem with, erm, Mr Jones and, erm, I had to take over some of his work. Pat: Oh my goodness. Why couldn't you get somebody else to do it for you? Is there anybody else that can do it? Stephen: Well, there is, but Mr Jones got bitten by a dog and then Emily, she had a problem, and her husband's left her so it was very difficult to find somebody else to replace me. Have you made anything for tea? Oh, sorry, hold on, I'm just coming up to some traffic lights. There's a policeman looking at me. Pat: Well don't look back at him. Stephen: I'm not. Oh, he's gone now. It's okay. Look, I'm really going to have to go. This policeman's watching me. Erm. Okay? I'm sorry. I'll be home soon. Bye. Pat: Bye. SECOND SECTION Stephen: Where is she? Come on. Pick up the phone. Hello. I'll try her mobile. Pat: Hello. Stephen: Ah, there you are. Why aren't you at home? Pat: Hi Steve, oh, erm, I'm sorry, erm, I'm at a friend's at the moment. Err. I've just had to come round here for a bit. Stephen: At a friend's? Pat: Yes. Stephen: Here I am stuck in traffic, in the pouring down rain. Why aren't you at home? You need to be at home. Pat: Oh. Do I need to be at home? Why do I need to be at home? Stephen: You need to be cooking my tea. Pat: Well, I'm sorry, err, I've half-cooked it. I mean if you . I'll try to come home as soon as possible perhaps. Stephen: But . Why did you go round there? I told you . I'll be home very soon. And . Pat: Well, I had to because, you know, poor Deborah, she was really, really upset. I mean her husband went and did a bit of a runner with her money and she was really upset. She was crying her eyes out, you see? So I had to come round. Stephen: Really? Okay. Okay. But . You know . What about the house? You can't be spending all day at your friend's house, watching television, reading newspapers. Pat: Well who said I was watching television and reading newspapers? She needed me. Stephen: She may need you. But I need you. There's things you've got to do. You've got to clean the house, you've got to make my tea. Have you done the ironing? Pat: You know I hate ironing. I haven't done ironing for a long time. But, I will come round. But, I'm afraid, that, erm, I'm extremely sorry about that. I'm really sorry that you're upset and stuck in traffic Stephen: Well, exactly, here I am stuck in traffic, struggling to get home, working all day long. Look, you're going to have to get round soon. Okay? I need you there. I'll be home soon, so . Pat: Okay. But I'll warn you that Deborah might need to come with me as well because I can't leave her on her own. Stephen: Not Deborah. Okay. Okay. As long as my tea's on the table I don't mind. Pat: She'll be very good. She will be. She'll be quiet I think. Stephen: Well perhaps she'll do the ironing then if you can't. Okay then. I'll be home soon. Pat: Okay. Stephen: Bye-bye. Pat: See you then. Stephen: Bye-bye. Dear oh dear. THIRD SECTION Stephen: Hello. Hello. Pat: Hello. Stephen: Hello. Pat: Hello. Stephen: Who's that? Pat: Hey! Listen. Why aren't you at home yet? You made all that fuss about me coming home and I'm at home now. Stephen: I'm still in traffic. You should see the traffic jam. It's terrible. Pat: Oh! Whatever! Stephen: Look. I'm very, very sorry. Pat: Listen. Listen. I'm not in the mood to put up with any your nonsense today. Okay? What I want you to do is, on your way home, right, pick up some milk and some onions for me please and also, err, some potatoes. Stephen: Do I have to? Pat: Yes you have to. Stephen: Do we actually need milk? Pat: Yes, well, err, you should see the way Deborah is going through the tea so I think it's a good idea to get some. Stephen: Okay. Pat: Okay. Stephen: What else? Pat: And then a pound and a half of potatoes. Stephen: So we need a pound and a half of potatoes. We need some milk and we need some . Pat: Onions. Stephen: Onions. Okay. Alright.
